A photographic record of the Franklin, Denison and Gordon Rivers in South West Tasmania, with images by Peter Dombrovskis and text by Bob Brown, published in 1983 at the height of the Franklin Dam campaign.
This book and its images are inseparable from one of the most significant environmental campaigns in Australian history. The proposed damming of the Franklin River by the Hydro-Electric Commission became a national issue, and Dombrovskis's photographs — particularly "Morning Mist, Rock Island Bend" — were used in the 1983 federal election campaign and are widely credited with helping turn public opinion against the dam. The High Court's ruling later that year blocked the dam and the Franklin remains a free-flowing wild river today.
Bob Brown, who led the campaign to save the river and later founded the Australian Greens, provided the text. Dombrovskis, one of Australia's most celebrated wilderness photographers, would go on to photograph Tasmania's wild places for the rest of his life.
