The World of Olegas Truchanas | Max Angus | 1975 | Fifth Edition [USED – HCDJ – Very Good]

Max Angus's tribute to Olegas Truchanas — the Lithuanian-born Tasmanian wilderness photographer, canoeist and environmental activist whose life and work directly shaped the course of Tasmanian conservation history.

Truchanas arrived in Tasmania as a refugee after WWII and found in the island's wild places a landscape that moved him deeply. He became an extraordinary wilderness photographer and one of the most skilled canoeists in Australia, making solo journeys through country that had defeated most previous expeditions.

His photographs of Lake Pedder — the glacial lake in the south-west wilderness that the Hydro-Electric Commission proposed to flood — became central to the campaign to save it, and his 1971 slide show presentation in Hobart was one of the defining moments of Australian environmental activism.

Truchanas died on 6 January 1972, aged 48 — he slipped on wet rocks in the Gordon River while attempting to retrieve his canoe, was washed away and drowned. His ashes were spread over Lake Pedder. The irony of his life was profound — he had worked for twenty years as an engineering clerk for the Hydro-Electric Commission, the very organisation whose dams he spent his later years fighting to stop. He resigned from the HEC at the end of 1971 and died on the river he had gone to photograph one last time before it too was changed forever.

This book, first published in 1975 by the Olegas Truchanas Publication Committee, is the tribute Max Angus produced to preserve and honour his friend's life and work. This is the fifth edition.
