The unit history of the 7th Battalion AIF, 2nd Brigade, 1st Division — a Victorian unit raised within a fortnight of the declaration of war in August 1914, under Lieutenant Colonel Harold "Pompey" Elliott.
The 7th Battalion landed at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915 as part of the second wave, and ten days later the entire 2nd Brigade was transferred to Cape Helles for the Second Battle of Krithia — a costly attack that cost the brigade almost a third of its strength.
Returning to ANZAC, the battalion fought at Lone Pine in August 1915, where four of its members were awarded the Victoria Cross: Corporal A.S. Burton (posthumous), Acting Corporal W. Dunstan, Lieutenant W. Symons and Captain F.H. Tubb — all three survivors wounded in the same ferocious close-quarters fighting holding a captured trench against relentless Turkish counter-attacks.
On the Western Front from March 1916, the battalion served through Pozières, Bullecourt, Menin Road, Broodseinde, Passchendaele and the Hundred Days Offensive of 1918, finishing the war near Epehy in late September. Total casualties across the war were 1,045 killed and 2,076 wounded.
Ron Austin has written histories of three AIF battalions — the 7th (this volume), the 4th (The Fighting Fourth) and the 29th (Black & Gold) — often available from The Book Cellar. This is the third volume in that series, published in 2004.
