The unit history of the 19th Battalion AIF, 5th Brigade, 2nd Division — a NSW battalion raised at Liverpool in March 1915.
The 19th arrived at Anzac Cove on 19 August 1915 and took part in the attack on Hill 60 — the last action of the August Offensive — before defending Pope's Hill until the evacuation in December.
On the Western Front from March 1916, the battalion fought at Pozières, then in November 1916 launched an attack near Flers in winter conditions that Charles Bean described as the worst ever encountered by the AIF. In 1917 it fought at second Bullecourt, Menin Road and Poelcappelle.
In April 1918 Lieutenant Percy Storkey was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at Hangard Wood during the defence against the German Spring Offensive. The battalion then fought at Amiens on 8 August, the legendary attack on Mont St Quentin on 31 August, and the Beaurevoir Line at Montbrehain on 3 October — its last battle.
On 10 October 1918 the 19th Battalion was disbanded to reinforce other battalions in the 5th Brigade, having suffered 2,903 casualties across the war with 874 killed.
