The unit history of the 45th Battalion AIF, 12th Brigade, 4th Division — a New South Wales unit raised in Egypt in March 1916 as part of the doubling of the AIF following the Gallipoli evacuation. Written by Major J.E. Lee, himself a member of the battalion, originally published by the 45th Battalion Reunion Association in 1962. This is the 1990 John Burridge Military Antiques facsimile reprint.
The 45th was formed by splitting the experienced 13th Battalion — roughly half its men were Gallipoli veterans, the other half fresh reinforcements from Australia. It arrived on the Western Front in June 1916 and fought at Pozières the same summer, then through Messines, Passchendaele, and the defence of Dernancourt in the spring of 1918, before the great Allied offensive of 8 August — the Hundred Days — during which the 45th captured 400 German prisoners, 30 artillery pieces and 18 machine guns in a single day.
For readers of Australian military literature, the 45th Battalion is also the unit in which Edward Lynch served — Lynch being the author of Somme Mud, one of the most widely read personal accounts of the Western Front. The chronology of Somme Mud follows the 45th's history directly, making this unit history a natural companion to that book.
At 132 pages with an honour roll and black and white illustrations, this is a compact but well-documented regimental history.
