The unit history of the 4th Battalion AIF — one of the first infantry units raised for the Australian Imperial Force, recruited from New South Wales in August 1914, within a fortnight of the declaration of war.

The 4th Battalion landed at Anzac Cove on 25 April 1915 as part of the second and third waves — the battalion's commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel Onslow Thompson was killed the following day. The battalion fought at Lone Pine in August 1915, where over a third of the unit died, before the evacuation of Gallipoli in December. From April 1916 the battalion served on the Western Front through major engagements including Pozières, Mouquet Farm, Bullecourt, Ypres and Passchendaele, and through the Hundred Days Offensive to the armistice.

Austin drew on letters and diaries obtained directly from families of veterans to give the account a personal and often poignant dimension alongside the operational history.

At 256 pages with black and white illustrations and a full index, this is a thorough unit history from one of Australia's most prolific AIF military historians — Austin has written histories of at least a dozen AIF battalions.
