Black and Gold – History of the 29th Battalion AIF | Ron Austin | 1997 | Signed & Numbered First Edition [USED – HCDJ – Very Good]

The unit history of the 29th Battalion AIF, 8th Brigade, 5th Division — a Victorian unit raised at Broadmeadows Camp in August 1915. Written by Ron Austin and published in 1997 as a signed and numbered first edition.

The 29th arrived in Egypt in December 1915, too late for Gallipoli, and transferred to France in June 1916. Its first major action was the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916 — one of the most catastrophic single-day engagements in Australian military history, in which the 8th Brigade suffered devastating losses in a matter of hours.

The battalion went on to serve through Polygon Wood, Amiens, Morlancourt and the Hindenburg Line through to the armistice in November 1918.

The title Black and Gold refers to the battalion's colour patch — the black over gold diamond of the 8th Brigade, 5th Division.

This is a signed and numbered first edition.  Number 121 of 500

At 231 pages with a full index and black and white illustrations, this is one of several AIF battalion histories written by Ron Austin, who also wrote histories of the 4th Battalion (The Fighting Fourth) and the 28th Battalion (Blue & White Diamond) — both also available from The Book Cellar.
