The unit history of the 51st Battalion AIF, 13th Brigade, 4th Division — a South Australian and Western Australian unit raised in Egypt in February 1916. Written by Neville Browning and published in 2000.
The 51st arrived on the Western Front in June 1916 and served through major engagements including Polygon Wood, Passchendaele, Villers-Bretonneux and the Hundred Days Offensive through to the armistice.
Note: Browning later wrote a more comprehensive history of the same battalion — For King and Cobbers (2007, 432 pages), also available from The Book Cellar. Fix Bayonets is the earlier account at 260 pages; For King and Cobbers is the fuller reference. Collectors and researchers of the 51st Battalion may want to consider both these titles.
