Nulli Secundus

Facsimile reprint of the unit history of the 2nd Battalion, AIF, 1914–1919, written by two of the battalion's own veterans, Lieutenant F.W. Taylor and Private T.A. Cusack.

The 2nd Battalion was among the first infantry units raised for the AIF, recruited from New South Wales alongside the 1st, 3rd and 4th Battalions to form the 1st Brigade. Raised within a fortnight of the declaration of war in August 1914, it embarked two months later and, after a stop in Albany, Western Australia, reached Egypt on 2 December. The battalion took part in the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915 as part of the second and third waves, and led the 1st Brigade's charge at Lone Pine on 6 August. It served at Anzac until the December 1915 evacuation.

After returning to Egypt, the battalion sailed for France in March 1916 and fought principally in the Somme Valley and around Ypres, with its first major action at Pozières in July 1916. As it advanced towards the Hindenburg Line in April 1917, Private T.J. Kenny attacked several enemy machine gun positions, earning the battalion's only Victoria Cross. The battalion was disbanded in early 1919. Its motto, Nulli Secundus — "Second to None" — gives the book its title.
