The unit history of the 10th Battalion A.I.F., written by Lieutenant Arthur Limb and originally published in 1919. This is the 1988 facsimile reprint produced by John Burridge Military Antiques of Swanbourne, WA, limited to 300 numbered copies.
The 10th Battalion was a South Australian unit, raised at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide in August 1914 — among the very first AIF units formed for the war. It was part of the covering force for the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915, and members of the 10th penetrated further inland than any other Australian troops during the initial fighting at Anzac Cove. The battalion went on to serve on the Western Front through major engagements including Pozières, Bullecourt, Polygon Wood and Passchendaele.
Author Arthur Limb was a member of the 10th battalion who rose through the ranks and was mentioned in dispatches three times. He survived the war but contracted pneumonia on the return voyage to Australia and died in May 1920, aged 26 — making this history, written in 1919, one of the last things he produced. The 1988 facsimile reprint was arranged by his great-nephew.
At 107 pages with appendices, a folding map and black and white illustrations, this is a compact but historically significant unit history. The 1919 original is exceptionally rare; the 1988 Burridge facsimile in good condition is itself not commonly found.
