The Diary of the Reverend Robert Knopwood 1803–1838 – First Chaplain of Van Diemen's Land | Mary Nicholls (Ed.) | 1977 [USED – HCDJ – Out of Print]

The complete diary of the Reverend Robert Knopwood — the first chaplain of Van Diemen's Land, who arrived with the founding party of European settlers in 1803 and remained in the colony until his death in 1838.

Knopwood kept a diary continuously from the moment of his arrival until near the end of his life — 35 years of daily observation covering the establishment of Hobart Town, the early convict system, the Aboriginal people he encountered, the colonial community and society as it developed, and the private life of a Church of England clergyman at the edge of the known world. He was a significant figure in early Hobart — gregarious, sociable and at the centre of colonial life — and his diary is the most continuous first-hand daily record of the first three decades of European settlement in Van Diemen's Land.

Edited by Mary Nicholls and published by the Tasmanian Historical Research Association (THRA) in 1977, this is the only complete published edition of the diary. At 738 pages with a full index, it is a substantial and invaluable primary source for anyone researching early Tasmanian colonial history, the founding period of Hobart, or Aboriginal and convict history in the first decades of European settlement.
