Knopwood - A Biography of the Reverend Robert Knopwood, Van Diemen's Land's First Chaplain - Geoffrey Stephens

Robert Knopwood (1763-1838) arrived in Van Diemen's Land as chaplain to Lieutenant-Governor David Collins's 1803 settlement expedition, conducting the first religious service in Hobart Town in February 1804. He served as a magistrate from 1804 to 1828, farmed land granted to him at Clarence Plains, Rokeby, and lived for a time at Cottage Green, Battery Point, after more than sixteen months in a tent. Known in the colony as a "sporting parson" and often in financial difficulty, Knopwood nonetheless kept a daily diary from 1803 until his death that remains one of the most valuable primary records of early colonial Hobart. He retired from his official duties in 1823 and served the Rokeby parish, unofficially, until he died in 1838.

Knopwood's own diary is available in our listing for The Diary of the Reverend Robert Knopwood 1803-1838, and his life is also covered in The Convicts' Good Parson.
