A Looking-Glass for Tasmania – Letters, Petitions and Manuscripts from Van Diemen's Land 1808–1845 | Eustace FitzSymonds | 1980 | Numbered 92/400 [USED – HCDJ – Out of Print]

A collection of letters, petitions and other manuscripts relating to Van Diemen's Land between 1808 and 1845, transcribed by Eustace FitzSymonds and published by Sullivan's Cove, Hobart in 1980, with a number of original document leaves reproduced in facsimile.

FitzSymonds was one of the most important editors of Van Diemen's Land primary sources — he also produced Mortmain (1977), the facsimile collection of convict petitions and letters, also regularly stocked in The Book Cellar. Where Mortmain focused specifically on convict voices, A Looking-Glass for Tasmania draws more broadly from the letters and petitions of the colonial period — covering the years from the earliest phase of European settlement through to 1845, and including documents from free settlers, officials and others alongside convict material.

At 288 pages with an index and original document reproductions throughout, this is a primary source collection of real value for researchers of the Van Diemen's Land colonial period.

This was planned as an edition of 1,000 copies but was reduced — only 400 were produced. This copy is number 92 of those 400, making it scarce.
