Van Diemen's Land Correspondents 1827–1849 – Letters to Sir William Hooker | T.E. Burns & J.R. Skemp (Eds.) | Frank Ellis (Ed.) | 1961 [USED – HC]

A collection of letters written from Van Diemen's Land to Sir William Hooker — director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew — between 1827 and 1849, compiled by T.E. Burns and J.R. Skemp. The correspondents include Ronald Campbell Gunn, Van Diemen's Land's most important colonial botanist; R.W. Lawrence; Jorgen Jorgenson — the extraordinary Dane who briefly became King of Iceland before being transported to Van Diemen's Land (the subject of Dan Sprod's biography The Usurper); and Sir John Franklin, Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land 1837–1843.

The letters cover the scientific, natural history and botanical work being conducted in the colony — the specimens being sent to Kew, the plants being documented, and the observations of an educated colonial community maintaining correspondence with the scientific establishment in London.

Published by the Queen Victoria Museum, Launceston in 1961. This is a genuine primary source collection of value to historians of colonial Van Diemen's Land, botany, and the scientific networks of the British Empire.
