Phillip Tardif's history of the earliest European settlement in Tasmania — focusing on Lieutenant John Bowen's 1803 establishment of the first European settlement at Risdon Cove on the Derwent River, and the subsequent founding of what became Hobart Town under Lieutenant Colonel David Collins in 1804.
Tardif draws on primary sources including the journals, orders and correspondence of the early colonists to document the actual events of those first months — who was there, what decisions were made, and how the settlement took shape in its earliest form. The Risdon Cove massacre of Aboriginal Tasmanians in May 1804 is among the events documented.
At 244 indexed pages, this is a carefully researched and well-sourced account of Tasmania's founding period — useful for anyone researching early colonial Hobart, the establishment of European settlement in Van Diemen's Land, or the first contacts between the colonists and the Aboriginal population.
