Frank Bolt's compilation of diary accounts and primary source material documenting the founding of Hobart Town — the establishment of the European settlement on the Derwent River in 1803 and 1804 by Lieutenant David Collins and his party.
The founding of what would become Hobart was not straightforward — Collins initially attempted to establish a settlement at Port Phillip Bay (the site of present-day Melbourne) before abandoning it and sailing south to Van Diemen's Land, where the settlement at Sullivan's Cove eventually took hold.
The diaries and accounts compiled here give a first-hand picture of those events from the people who were present.
