Brothers' Home Derby

Brothers' Home Derby

Derby, in Tasmania's North-East, began life as "Brothers' Home" — the name given to the settlement that grew around the Krushka brothers' tin mine, discovered in 1876. Renamed Derby in 1887, the town grew to over 3,000 people at its mining peak, with the Briseis Mine becoming one of the richest tin mines in the world. Disaster struck on 4 April 1929, when the Briseis Dam on the Cascade River collapsed after days of heavy rain, killing 14 people in what remains the worst flood in Tasmanian history. John Beswick tells this history in detail.

We also stock Ringarooma Days, which covers the same Krushka family and district — see Related Products below. Order two or more titles together and we'll combine postage into one parcel. Many more of our Tasmanian titles are yet to be listed online — see our full catalogues at justtassiebooks.com/catalogues.html.
