A detailed history of north-west and western Tasmania from 1825 to 1900, written by Kerry Pink and published in 1990. The book covers the settlement and development of the region across three quarters of a century — from the earliest European exploration of the north-west coast through the establishment of towns, farms, industries and communities across the region.
The north-west of Tasmania has its own distinct history, shaped by its geography, its agricultural land, its timber and mining industries, and the families who settled it. Pink draws on a wide range of primary sources to document the region's development through the colonial period to Federation.
The book covers the districts of Burnie, Ulverstone, Devonport, Stanley, Strahan and the broader north-west and west coast. At 387 pages with an index and illustrations, it is the most substantial single-volume history of the region. Out of print since publication and not commonly found in any condition.
