The most comprehensive account of the Matthew Brady gang and associated bushrangers active in Van Diemen's Land between 1824 and 1827, drawn from James Calder's original 1873 text together with newly discovered manuscripts, edited by Eustace Fitzsymonds and published by Sullivan's Cove, Hobart in 1979.
Matthew Brady was the most celebrated bushranger of the Van Diemen's Land era — a transported convict who escaped from Macquarie Harbour in 1824 and led a gang that terrorised the colonial establishment for three years, becoming something of a folk hero to the convict population before his capture and execution in 1826.
The bushrangers documented in this volume include Brady, McCabe, Dunne, Bryan, Crawford, Murphy, Bird, McKenney, Goodwin, Pawley, Bryant, Cody, Hodgetts, Gregory, Tilley, Ryan, Williams and their associates — a comprehensive record of the whole Brady era. Calder's 1873 text is itself a historical document — written by a man who had direct access to people who remembered the Brady period — and Fitzsymonds's editorial additions from newly discovered manuscripts make this 1979 Sullivan's Cove edition the most complete version of the account available.
