The real William Buelow Gould — the convict artist who became the protagonist of Richard Flanagan's second novel Gould's Book of Fish. Gould was transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1827 at the age of 24. He served time at Macquarie Harbour — the brutal penal station at Sarah Island on the west coast — where he painted fish specimens for the colonial surgeon.
