Traces – The Photography of Chris Bell | 2025 [NEW – Linen-Bound HC]

Chris Bell's sixth book — a retrospective of fifty of his finest photographs from over 40 years photographing Tasmania's wild places, published to coincide with his major exhibition at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston in September 2025.

Bell moved to Tasmania in 1972 to join the campaign to save Lake Pedder and has been one of the island's most committed wilderness photographers and conservationists ever since — a founding member of both The Wilderness Society and the Tasmanian National Parks Association. His previous books include A Time to Care: Tasmania's Endangered Wilderness (1980), Primal Places — Tasmania (2002) and The Tarkine (2012) - all titles often available from The Book Cellar.

Traces brings together images from across Bell's archive — large-format analogue work from earlier decades alongside more recent digital photography — presenting his long engagement with the Tasmanian landscape in a single volume. The book includes a foreword by QVMAG Senior Curator Jon Addison and an essay by Emeritus Professor Tim Bonyhady, one of Australia's foremost environmental lawyers and cultural historians. Bell also contributes a personal reflection on his creative journey.

At 116 large-format pages (282mm x 320mm) with colour photographs throughout, this is a finely produced publication.
