Priceless Heritage grew out of a photographic competition held by The Mercury newspaper in 1963–64, marking the paper's 109th anniversary and organised with the National Trust of Australia (Tasmania). Judged across six categories, the competition drew 106 winning historic properties from across the state — including, in the category for best preserved town or country house, The Grange on Campbell Town's own High Street. The strong public response to the competition led directly to this book's publication.
