Poppy Gee's debut novel, set at the actual Bay of Fires — the stretch of coastline on Tasmania's north-east coast known for its distinctive orange- lichened rocks and clear water, between St Helens and Binalong Bay.
A body washes up near a remote camping ground during the summer holidays, and the small community of families who return to the same beach shack each year finds itself under suspicion. The investigation forces old grievances, secrets and loyalties to the surface.
Note: this novel is not connected to the ABC television series Bay of Fires (2023). The TV series borrowed the name of the location but is set in a fictional west coast town and follows a completely different story. Poppy Gee's novel is set at the real Bay of Fires on the east coast and predates the series by a decade.
At 384 pages, this is an atmospheric crime novel that uses its specific Tasmanian location — the shack culture, the summer community, the remote coastline — as an integral part of the story.
