Destiny – The Extraordinary Career of Pianist Eileen Joyce | Tunley, Rogers & Meher-Homji | 2017 [USED – SC – Out of Print]

Eileen Joyce was born in Tasmania — in Zeehan, the west coast mining town, in 1908 — and went on to become one of the most celebrated pianists of the 20th century.

Percy Grainger described the young Joyce in 1926 as "the most transcendentally gifted young piano student he had heard in the last 25 years." She trained at the Leipzig Conservatorium, debuted in London in 1930, and built a career that took her to the summit of concert pianism in Europe and Britain through the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

At her zenith she was compared in popular esteem with Gracie Fields and Vera Lynn. She was also a film star — appearing in British films of the 1940s — and became famous for changing into a different gown between pieces at her concerts. When she performed in the United States in 1950, Irving Kolodin called her "the world's greatest unknown pianist."

This 2017 book by David Tunley, Victoria Rogers and Cyrus Meher-Homji examines her career through in-depth essays covering her studies in Germany, her concert appearances, her film roles, her recordings and her fascination with the harpsichord and early music. Includes a complete listing of her concerto and solo recital repertoire and the most comprehensive discography published to date.
