Trouwerner is the Indigenous name for Tasmania itself — and this book is a yarn between three Tasmanians: Elder Aunty Patsy Cameron, the 28th Tasmanian Governor Kate Warner, and journalist Martin Flanagan.
Aunty Patsy Cameron grew up on Flinders Island and traces her Aboriginal heritage through her mother's line to four ancestral grandmothers, and further back to the revered Pairrebeenne/Trawlwoolway clan leader Mannalargenna. She holds a Master of Arts in Tasmanian Aboriginal History and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Tasmania, and is an Officer of the Order of Australia. She has spent her life working to tell a fuller story of Tasmania's Aboriginal history — one that challenges the persistent and damaging lie that Truganini was the last Tasmanian Aboriginal person.
Martin Flanagan is a Tasmanian journalist and author of twenty books. The conversation that led to this book began when he attended Mannalargenna Day — an annual gathering honouring Aunty Patsy's ancestral grandfather — and heard Governor Kate Warner say things he had never expected to hear from a Tasmanian governor about the island's colonial history.
The book moves through the coming-into-being time, the colonisation of Trouwerner, the lies of history, and on to the power of truth-telling and hope for the future. It is a story of kinship and respect, told in the form of a conversation that invites the reader in rather than lecturing from outside.
