Long Trek South - Barry Brimfield

Long Trek South traces human occupation of Tasmania, and the once-connected Bassiana land bridge to mainland Australia, from first arrival before 42,000 years BP through to around 200 years ago. Barry Brimfield moves through this span period by period - the Palawa's early arrival, the wallaby-hunting era, isolation through the last glacial maximum, the flooding of Bass Strait, and later cultural expansion - drawing on changing sea levels, land mass separations, glacial ice-sheet extent and vegetation change to explain how Aboriginal Tasmanians adapted their culture to an increasingly isolated environment; as Brimfield puts it, "necessity is the mother of invention." Appendices cover stone technology alongside explanatory maps of sea levels, land mass separations, last glacial maximum ice extent and vegetation change.
