Compiled by R.M.H. Garvie, assistant to the Hydro-Electric Commissioner, to mark roughly fifty years of hydro-electricity in Tasmania.
The romantic title refers to the generating capacity the Hydro was projected to reach once its Poatina underground power station was completed in 1964 — a million horsepower. At the time of publication the Hydro employed 4,430 people, including 2,000 labourers, and the book is dedicated "to the vision, the skill, and the labour of all who toiled in the creation of the power developments in Tasmania."
This is the earliest of what became a trio of major HEC histories, alongside Roger Lupton's Lifeblood (2000) and Heather Felton's Ticklebelly Tales (2008/2013) — both also in our stock.
