King Island, in Bass Strait, has been the site of over 60 shipwrecks and more than 800 lives lost, including the Cataraqui (1845, Australia's worst civil maritime disaster, over 400 dead), the convict ship Neva (1835, 218 lost) and the British Admiral (79 lost).

Wychwood was developed over many years from farmland into an extensive garden that became one of the most visited private gardens in Tasmania — known for its use of structure, stone, water and a wide range of plants suited to the cool Tasmanian climate.
