The Black War – Fear, Sex and Resistance in Tasmania | Nicholas Clements | 2014 [SC]

Between 1825 and 1831, close to 200 British colonists and around 1,000 Aboriginal Tasmanians died violently in what became known as the Black War — the most intense and sustained frontier conflict in Australian history. Nicholas Clements takes a different approach to this history from most accounts.

The Brief History of the Launceston Western Railway 1867-1904

The Launceston and Western Railway Company was formed in 1867 to build Tasmania's first railway line, connecting Launceston to Deloraine to carry agricultural produce from the rich farmland around Perth and Longford to port for export. The 45-mile broad-gauge line opened in 1871 — but the company was almost immediately in financial trouble, and the government stepped in to take over its operations in 1873, though the formal purchase of its assets wasn't completed until 1904.
