William Buelow Gould – Convict Artist of Van Diemen's Land | Garry Darby | 1980 [USED – HCDJ – Good]

The real William Buelow Gould — the convict artist who became the protagonist of Richard Flanagan's second novel Gould's Book of Fish.

Gould was transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1827 at the age of 24. He served time at Macquarie Harbour — the brutal penal station at Sarah Island on the west coast — where he painted fish specimens for the colonial surgeon. Those paintings, and the man who made them, became the basis for Flanagan's novel - also available from The Book Cellar.

Garry Darby's 1980 study by the Copperfield Art Library is the scholarly account of the real Gould — his life, his convict career, and his work as an artist in Van Diemen's Land. At the time of publication it catalogued all of Gould's then-known works, with colour and black and white illustrations throughout.

Readers of Gould's Book of Fish who want to see the real man and the real paintings behind the fiction will find this the natural companion volume.

Out of print since 1980 and not commonly found.
