Gould's Book of Fish – A Novel in Twelve Fish | Richard Flanagan | 2018 [SC – Fiction]

Richard Flanagan's second novel — set at the Macquarie Harbour penal station at Sarah Island, the most feared convict settlement in the British Empire.

William Buelow Gould is a convict painter ordered to paint a book of fish at Sarah Island in 1828. What follows is a hallucinatory, darkly comic and deeply moving account of convict life, love, brutality and survival at the edge of the known world — told through the voice of a man who is all of those things at once: liar, murderer, forger, artist.

Flanagan was awarded the Man Booker Prize in 2014 for The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Gould's Book of Fish was first published in 2001 and is widely considered one of the great Australian novels. This is a more recent paperback edition.
