Joseph Lycett (c.1774–1828), twice convicted of forgery in England, was transported to Sydney in 1814. After a second forgery conviction in 1815, he was sent to the harsh Newcastle penal settlement — until Commandant Captain James Wallis recognised his talent and set him to painting the district's landscapes and its Awabakal Aboriginal people instead of labouring in the coal mines. His work includes Corroboree at Newcastle, the first known European depiction of a nighttime Aboriginal ceremony, painted in an era before photography existed. Pardoned in 1822, Lycett returned to England and published Views in Australia (1824–25), a series of 49 aquatint plates depicting the scenery of New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land.

This substantial exhibition catalogue, edited by John McPhee, brings together essays by multiple contributors: a biography of Lycett by McPhee; painting and patronage by Richard Neville; Lycett as artist in print by Roger Butler; Joseph Lycett and the Awabakal by Jakelin Troy; and Burigon, Chief of the Newcastle Tribe, by Shane Frost — alongside a comprehensive catalogue covering his botanical works, Newcastle oils, the Wallis album, Sydney watercolours, the Derby album, Sydney and Hobart lithographs, and his Van Diemen's Land watercolours.
