Pam Wood's historical novel based on the life of Henry Gardiner — the first European ferryman on the Arthur River in Tasmania's northwest wilderness, who operated the crossing from 1878 to 1913.
Gardiner was born in London in 1834 and came to Tasmania's developing colony, eventually taking the ferryman's role on the remote Arthur River in the Tarkine — one of the most isolated positions in the colony. Over 35 years he ferried miners, drovers, settlers and travellers across the river at the edge of the wilderness, observing the full range of humanity that passed through a remote and demanding part of the world.
Wood's novel is based on historical research into the real Henry Gardiner and the period he worked — bringing fiction to the gaps a historical record leaves. The Arthur River and Tarkine setting is specific and vivid, grounded in the actual landscape of Tasmania's northwest coast.
At 323 pages, a readable piece of Tasmanian historical fiction set in country that doesn't often appear in Australian literature.
