For seventeen weeks over the summer of 1876–77, George Campbell Meredith and his brother Owen prospected and trekked through the remote country along the Pieman River on Tasmania's west coast — one of the least-known and most difficult pieces of terrain on the island. The Pieman River country was virtually unknown to European settlers in 1876, and the Meredith brothers' account is an early primary source for the exploration of what is now the Tarkine region.
George Campbell Meredith and his brother Owen were the sons of Charles and Louisa Anne Meredith — the colonial writer, naturalist and artist whose books on Tasmanian natural history, including My Home in Tasmania and Tasmanian Friends and Foes, are among the most vivid first-hand accounts of 19th century Tasmanian colonial life. This account of their Pieman River expedition was edited and published by their descendant Alice Meredith Hodgson in 2009 — drawing on journals and records from the original expedition.
This is a compact but detailed account of an early European journey through country that few settlers had seen.
