Excella - Jewel of the Derwent passenger ferry |Suzanne Smythe|

The Excella was a Hobart-built passenger and excursion vessel, launched in 1912, carrying up to 647 passengers on the River Derwent. She was a popular vessel for regattas and race days on the harbour, carrying picnickers and spectators, serving as a "mother ship" for rowing crews, and hosting music, food and drink on board for outings that brought together all classes of Hobart society. In 1951 she was sold, along with the Marana, Breone and Bass, to the Roche Brothers by Henry Jones & Co (IXL). She was withdrawn from service by 1965 and eventually broken up after lying abandoned for some years. Suzanne Smythe tells her story.
