The Minerva Journal of John Washington Price - A voyage from Cork, Ireland to Sydney, New South Wales, 1798-1800

John Washington Price was just 21, and recently graduated from Dublin's College of Surgeons, when he sailed as ship's surgeon aboard the transport Minerva from Cork to Sydney in 1799, carrying 200 convicts. Many were United Irishmen transported for their role in the 1798 Rebellion, including the rebel leader General Joseph Holt. Price's journal, held today in the British Library's Wellesley Collection, is a detailed, first-hand account of convicts, sailors, soldiers, and the people and natural history encountered along the way — and includes 29 of Price's own watercolour illustrations, drawing skills he picked up during the voyage from a fellow traveller, the artist John William Lewin.

This first edition, transcribed and edited by Pamela Jeanne Fulton, is limited to 1000 copies, and is No. 25 in the second numbered series of Miegunyah Volumes.
