A facsimile of George Hamilton's 1793 account of the voyage of HMS Pandora — the Royal Navy frigate sent to arrest the Bounty mutineers in the South Seas. Hamilton was the ship's surgeon and the only eyewitness to publish a full contemporary account of the voyage.
The Pandora sailed in 1790, captured fourteen mutineers in Tahiti, and was wrecked on the Great Barrier Reef while returning to England — forcing captain, crew and prisoners to make an open-boat voyage of over 1,100 miles to Timor. Hamilton's account is the primary eyewitness record of these events. Despite its significance, the book enjoyed only limited circulation after its original 1793 publication and was not reprinted for over two centuries — making this 1998 Hordern House facsimile the first opportunity most readers have had to access it.
This 1998 facsimile was published by Hordern House, Sydney as number four in their Australian Maritime Series. It includes a foreword by Alex Allen and an essay by Peter Gesner, Curator of Marine Archaeology at the Queensland Museum and the leading expert on the Pandora shipwreck site on the Great Barrier Reef. Limited to 950 copies. Handbound in quarter cherry Scottish calf with marbled paper sides.
