To Solitude Consigned – The Tasmanian Journal of William Smith O'Brien 1849–1853 | Richard Davis (Ed.) | 1995 | Limited First Edition 453/500 [USED – HCDJ – Very Good]

The Tasmanian journal of William Smith O'Brien, covering his years as a political exile in Van Diemen's Land from 1849 to 1853. Edited by Richard Davis and published in 1995 as a limited first edition of 500 numbered copies.

O'Brien was one of the most prominent figures in the Young Ireland movement — a Protestant Irish nationalist and Member of the Westminster Parliament who led the failed 1848 rebellion against British rule. Convicted of high treason and sentenced to death, his sentence was commuted to transportation for life, and he arrived in Van Diemen's Land in 1849 along with other Young Ireland leaders including John Mitchel and Thomas Meagher.

His journal covers four years of exile — his refusal to give his parole, his confinement to Maria Island, his later movement to New Norfolk, and his observations of colonial life in Van Diemen's Land. O'Brien was a meticulous and literate observer, and the journal is both a first-hand account of the convict system from an unusual perspective and a document of significance to Irish political history. He was eventually pardoned and returned to Ireland in 1856, where he remained a significant public figure until his death in 1864. His papers are held in the National Library of Ireland.
