The Huts of kunanyi/Mount Wellington - lost Arts and Crafts recreational huts of Hobart's mountain, 1890-1920 | Maria Grist | 2024 [USED – SC]

Between 1890 and 1920, groups of young Hobart men and women spent their weekends building a series of ornate rustic huts on the lower slopes of kunanyi/Mount Wellington — working entirely in their spare time, using only local materials, in the popular "Arts and Crafts" style of the day. Beyond the huts themselves, the builders added bridges, arbours, summer houses, gardens and handmade bush furniture, and became known for their generous hospitality. The huts became genuinely famous in their time, featuring on postcards and drawing visitors from across Australia and overseas, before falling into disrepair and, in most cases, disappearing almost entirely from public memory.

Author Maria Grist, together with her husband John, spent decades researching, exploring and documenting these lost structures — often locating little more than scattered stones or old tree fern plantings to piece together a hut's story — drawing on newspaper accounts, postcards and photographs. This book documents 25 of the huts in detail.
