The General examines the two visits Bruny d'Entrecasteaux's expedition made to Tasmanian waters, in the autumn of 1792 and the summer of 1793, as part of France's 1791 mission to the Western Pacific to search for the missing explorer La Pérouse and carry out a wider programme of scientific work.
Because the expedition ended in disarray in the Dutch East Indies, most of its natural history collections and field notes were lost, so Josiane Piard-Bernier and Brian Plomley draw largely on Labillardière's own published Voyage (1800), together with Ventenat's journal and La Motte du Portail's letters to Zélie, to reconstruct both the scientific record and the personal relationships among those on board. An appendix reproduces the nominal roll of each frigate's officers and crew.
