J.S. Cumpston (1909–1986) wrote this account of the earliest European visitors to the Furneaux Group in Bass Strait, covering exploration between 1797 and 1810 — including figures such as Matthew Flinders, George Bass and James Kelly. First published in 1972 as Roebuck Society Publication No. 5, this copy is the 1978 second printing. Cumpston later expanded and combined this work with a companion piece on sealing at King Island into a larger 1973 volume, First Visitors to Bass Strait.
