A history of the Star Theatre chain in Tasmania — the independent cinema network that operated picture theatres across the island through much of the 20th century.
Written by Jenny Overton and published in 2020, the book traces the establishment, operation and eventual closure of the Star Theatres, documenting the buildings, the films they showed, the people who ran them and the communities they served. The Star Theatres were a fixture of Tasmanian town life for generations — in Launceston, Hobart and regional centres across the island.
For anyone who grew up going to the pictures at a Star Theatre, or who is researching the social and cultural history of Tasmanian towns, this is the record of an era that is now largely gone.
The Star Theatre in Invermay, Launceston — one of the original Star Theatres documented in this book — was restored and reopened in 2018 as an independent cinema, café and bar, and continues to operate today at 217B Invermay Road. For anyone who remembers the original, this book is the history of what it was part of.
Illustrated with colour and black and white photographs throughout.
