Published in 2003, this first volume of The Fabrication of Aboriginal History focuses on Van Diemen's Land from 1803 to 1847 — covering the period of the Black War and the removal of the surviving Aboriginal population to Flinders Island.

Windschuttle argued that the established accounts of the Black War — including estimates of Aboriginal deaths and the characterisation of colonial policy as genocidal — were based on inaccurate or fabricated sources. The book provoked a substantial response from Australian historians, and generated one of the most significant historiographical debates in recent Australian history.
