Beth Roberts's story of Manganinnie — an Aboriginal Tasmanian woman separated from her people during the Black Drive of 1830, the coordinated colonial military operation that attempted to sweep the remaining Aboriginal population of Van Diemen's Land into the Tasman Peninsula.

The story was adapted into a highly regarded Australian film in 1980, directed by John Honey and produced by the Tasmanian Film Corporation — one of the few feature films made in Tasmania and one of the earliest Australian films to centre an Aboriginal woman's perspective and experience. The film brought significant attention to the history of the Black War and the forced removal of Tasmania's Aboriginal people.

Roberts's novel is the literary source for the film — a quiet, humane account of Manganinnie's journey through the Tasmanian bush during one of the most traumatic periods in the island's history.

At 122 pages, this is a short, readable work suitable for older children and adults.
