King - the Story of a River, by Patsy Crawford, follows the King River in Tasmania as it flows into Macquarie Harbour, and the damage caused by copper mining and its subsequent environmental remediation. Between 1893 and 1994, the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company discharged an estimated 100 million tonnes of mine tailings into the Queen and King River system, destroying aquatic life along the lower river and leaving a tailings delta the size of a city suburb where the King meets Macquarie Harbour. Rehabilitation work on the river system has continued for decades since mining waste discharge ended.
