A facsimile reproduction of Captain H. Butler Stoney's 1856 account of his residence in Tasmania and his descriptive tour through the island from Macquarie Harbour on the west coast north to Circular Head at Stanley. Stoney served as an officer in Van Diemen's Land during the late convict era and his account covers the people, landscapes, settlements and industries he encountered across the island — including the west coast, the north-west, and the remote country around Macquarie Harbour and the Gordon River that was barely known to most colonists of the time.

At 311 pages, it is a detailed and literate first-hand account of Tasmania at a pivotal moment — the colony was about to achieve self-government, transportation was ending, and the island was in transition from penal colony to free settlement.

This 1982 facsimile was produced by Melanie Publications (published by Benson Walker) in a limited edition of 250 numbered copies, half-bound in golden kangaroo hide with a protective slipcase. This copy is number 181 of 250.

CONDITION
