Kate Julia Cowle (1863–1916), a Fingal-born pianist and amateur botanist, is recorded as the first European woman to summit Cradle Mountain, climbing it in January 1910 alongside her husband Gustav Weindorfer. It was Kate's own botanical scholarship — she presented a scientific paper in Melbourne in 1903 — that first sparked their shared interest, and their five-week honeymoon in 1906 was spent collecting plant specimens on Mount Roland, where Gustav first glimpsed the distant peaks of Cradle Mountain. Kate used her own inheritance to help purchase the Cradle Valley land on which the couple built Waldheim, their timber "forest home," opened to guests in 1913. Kate died in April 1916, aged 52, likely of cancer, before the couple's shared dream of a protected reserve was realised in 1922. In 2022, descendants and friends gathered at Waldheim to formally honour her memory alongside Gustav's. Sally Schnackenberg tells her story here.
