The first volume in Sarah Rackham's three-volume series documenting the construction villages built by the Hydro-Electric Commission to house workers and their families during the great dam-building era in Tasmania's Central Highlands.

Waddamana was the site of the HEC's first major power station, built in 1916 — now a museum. Shannon and Tarraleah were later construction camps and villages built to support the push into the Central Plateau in the 1930s. Tarraleah in particular became one of the most distinctive of the hydro villages — an entire planned community of workers' housing, recreation facilities and infrastructure, built in the bush at altitude and now preserved as an unusual piece of mid-20th century social history.

Rackham documents the history and daily life of these communities — the workers who built the dams, the families who lived in the villages, and the distinctive social world that grew up around the HEC's operations.
