Launched in 1903 at Bellingen, NSW, the three-masted topsail schooner Alma Doepel was sold into Tasmanian ownership in 1915 and went on to become part of Hobart's Henry Jones (IXL) "jam fleet," carrying fruit and jam between Hobart and the South Yarra jam factory.
As part of the Bass Strait "Mosquito Fleet," she set a record run from Hobart to Melbourne Heads of 58 hours 30 minutes — the only vessel in that fleet to carry square sail. During the Second World War she was requisitioned by the army as a supply vessel in Papua New Guinea, before returning to Tasmanian commercial service, and later spent years carrying limestone, once stripped of her rigging.
Written by Captain Ralph McDonell, this book covers Alma Doepel 's working life through to 1975. The Alma Doepel survives today and, at the time of writing, is undergoing full restoration in Melbourne as a heritage sail training vessel — one of the oldest topsail schooners still in existence.
