Annie Baxter (later Dawbin, 1816–1905) sailed for Van Diemen's Land in 1834 as the young wife of an army officer stationed in Hobart Town and Launceston. She kept an extensive diary throughout her life — 32 volumes, later published in full, running to some 845,000 words — regarded today as one of the richest surviving first-hand accounts of colonial Australian social life.

During her Launceston years she was a close friend of Richard Dry, who later became Premier of Tasmania. This edition presents her memories of Tasmania, alongside her later years at the Macleay River and New England districts of New South Wales and Port Fairy in Victoria's Western District, covering 1834 to 1848.
